Training
Once an Athenian boy turned 18, he was registered in a deme and entered into a two year period of military training. He was supervised by three elected members of the tribe. They were over the age of forty. During the first year of train, two of the elected trainers taught the boy weapon handling and drilling and after the years was completed they were required to show off their skills in a show. (3)
Athenian Soldiers had to serve two years in the army. after their first year serving they were equipped with a sword and shield(that was engraved with the states emblem. they were able to be called into battle anytime up to the age of 60. (4)
Military Leaders
Athen's military was controlled by the Strategos which basically meant generals. it was made by ten men that were elected by the ten tribes of citizens. Their duties included Military expeditions and Athens external affairs. (5)
Strategies
The Strategos were also the tacticians for Athens and came up with mos of their strategies. They were most successful in naval battles because of thier powerful triremes (5)
Athenian children were raised in the fields in philosophy, mathematics and music which strengthened their mental ability. This meant they could make small changes to tactics if need be to make sure success was guaranteed. (6)
Government influence
Athens government didn't have a high value on their military like Sparta did because Athenian boys only started training at the age of eighteen and training only lasted for two years. After the two years of training, only two years of service was rquired and after his service he only had to serve again if called into battle. he was elligble until the age of 60. (4)
Athens government still tried to keep their value as high as possible by have high levels of education making superior soldiers.(6)
