Control of the Military
The Spartan army was controlled by two kings. they were chosen from two royal families, the Agiads and the Eurypondids. according to spartan legend the families were descendants of Hercules. The many roles the Kings were expected to fill were chief priest, commander-in-chief of the army, judge and lawgiver. One of the kings was expected to lead into battle, he would be the first on to the battlefield and last to leave. The other king would stay and run the city. (1)

The Ephors were the men who came up with the strategies used during warfare, they were also the kings advisers. There were five of them, one from each Spartan region. they were elected annually and could only participate once in a lifetime. Spartan troops fought in a group called Phalanx. the four different divisions in a phalanx were:

Training in Sparta was known as the Agoge and training for a Spartan boy started at the age of seven and finished at the age of thirty. At age seven boys left their families and moved into a barracks to live with other boys while they train. Basic things they were taught were:

Sparta had a very high value on their military. Every single man was required to participate in their military. They also had a high value because they made boys start training at an early age making it more natural as a soldier and having better skills. Their Government strongly influenced the value set for Sparta by having high education levels and raising fit boys to always be stronger and more brutal in a battle. (1)

- An Enomotia which was made up of four groups of 8 men, known today as a platoon.
- An pentekostys was made up of four enomotia and today is known as a company.
- a lochos was made up of two pentekostys and is known today as a battalion.
